Beer Festival @ Delaney's Tap Room and Restaurant

Beer Festival:  8th Annual Delaney's Chili Cook-off & Beer Festival

Location:  Delaney's Tap Room and Restaurant @ 882 Whalley Avenue, New Haven

Date/Time: Saturday, July 14th 1PM - 5PM

Price:  Tickets are on sale now, just head (HERE) for a link to purchase them now, or head down to Delaney's to buy one in person. If you buy your ticket in advance, it's only $30, which includes chili and two pints of beer, and all the samples you'd like to try! If you buy your tickets at the door, they're $35.

The Skinny:  The 8th Annual Delaney's Chili Cook-Off and Beer Festival is almost here!!!  Before I dive into all the savory and hoppy details, I need to divulge something.  I went to this event for the first time ever, last summer.  It instantly became my favorite craft beer event.  It beats out the Great American Craft Beer Festival in Rhode Island and the Vermont Brewers Festival (which is located in a park next to Lake Champlain in beautiful Burlington, Vermont.  This event is better than any Brewery visit or Tap Takeover I have attended.

This, to put it simply, is THE Event that I have been blabbing about to my friends and relatives (craft beer drinkers or not) since the moment I attended it last year.  So, clearly I am very excited to both write about it and attend it again this year.

I'll try to paint the scene for those who have not been to this festival or Delaney's before.  Delaney's is in the Westville section of New Haven (nowhere near downtown and more of a suburban area).  The event is held outside.  The beer tents are located on a closed off section of Central Avenue (that is maybe 100-150 feet long (SOOO much great craft beer in such a small area!!!).  They plan to offer more than 100 different craft brews from breweries throughout the U.S. and even a few international brews!!!  They offer unlimited samples, so please plan accordingly with transportation and as always, taste responsibly.

A large tent, located in their small parking lot covers an area of long cafeteria style tables (Some of the tables have the chilis lined up and some have chairs to sit at to taste the chilis, drinks some beers or just take break in the shade.  Although they do have judges for the chili competition, they also do give out a people's choice award.  So eat early, eat often and cast your vote!  Also, if you head on down to Delaney's in the next week or two you might still be able to enter the chili cook-off!  Just ask one of their friendly bartenders

The parking lot is also where you can try to get one of the Delaney's bartenders soaked in the dunk tank (which of course becomes more and more fun and more and more challenging as the hours go by).  You can purchase some awesome BBQ (if the chilis aren't enough for ya) and listen to some great live music.  As the event draws to a close, the tent area is also the scene of an awesome raffle (I highly recommend bringing a $20 or so as this event is for a several great causes and the prizes are fantastic too! (Yankees tickets, cases of craft beer, gift certificates etc)

All of the proceeds from this event will benefit three charities:

So with all that this event has to offer, you can probably see why it is my favorite.  The beers are great and plentiful as are the chilis.  There is awesome live music throughout.  All of that is including in the modest admission price.  If you bring along some extra cash, you can test your arm on the dunk tank, get some BBQ or try your luck at their fun raffle.  And of course all of this is in the name of a three great causes!!!  Perfect for a July Saturday afternoon.

Plan B Simsbury, Wednesday, April 18th 6PM-8PM

Plan B West Hartford, Thursday, April 19th 6PM-8PM

Brewery: Goose Island Beer Company, Chicago, Illinois

The Skinny:  This is a mega statewide Tap Takeover next week.  Don't miss your chance to taste some of the finest food in Connecticut and some of the finest craft beer that the Windy City has to offer.  Goose Island Beer Company of Chicago, Illinois will be invading CT and specifically all four current Plan B locations.  They will be taking over the taps of Plan B Glastonbury next Monday, Plan B Milford and Plan B Simsbury next Wednesday and Plan B West Hartford next Thursday.

Goose Island Beer Company will be commandeering 5 of the taps at each location and offering up some of their savory brews for just $5 each!  On tap will be:

Honker's Ale
Chicago's authentic craft beer since 1988. Inspired by visits to English country pubs, Honker's Ale combines a spicy hop aroma with a rich malt middle to create a perfectly balanced beer. Immensely drinkable, Honker's Ale is not only a beer that drinkers can trust, but one they'll look forward to.
Hop Bitterness (IBU): 30
Color: Sunset
Malt: 2 Row, Caramel, Wheat, Roasted BarleyHops

Styrian GoldingIndia Pale Ale
A hop lover's dream. The British who colonized India were an adventurous lot, but English ales didn't fare well on long journeys. Brewers began to use more hops to preserve their beers. Goose Island has crafted its own version of this classic pale ale featuring an inviting spicy hop aroma and fruity flavor, set off by a dry malt middle that ensures that the long hop finish won't soon be forgotten. Hop Bitterness (IBU) 55
Color: Bourbon
Malt: Special PaleHops: Styrian Golding, Cascade, Centennial

312 Urban Wheat Ale
Experience densely populated flavor. 312's hazy appearance lets you know that it's unfiltered ale. Its spicy aroma of Cascade hops is followed by a crisp, fruity ale flavor that's delivered in a smooth, creamy body. 312 is not like any other beer we brew at Goose Island, but it's certainly no less than you'd expect.
Hop Bitterness (IBU): 18
Color: Hazy Straw
Malt: 2 Row, Torrified Wheat
Hops: Liberty, Cascade, First Gold Sophie

Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in wine barrels with orange peel, Sophie is a tart, dry, sparkling ale. A subtle, spicy white pepper note, a hint of citrus from the orange peel and a creamy vanilla finish make Sophie an intriguing choice for Champagne drinkers and beer drinkers who are fond of Belgian Saisons.
Hop Bitterness (IBU) 20
Color: Champagne
Malt: Pilsner, Wheat
Hops: Amarillo

Matilda
Belgian Style Pale Ale. Wild in character, with a slightly fruity aroma and spicy yeast flavor that is as unique as it is satisfying - Matilda is an intriguing choice for beer and wine lovers alike. Dry and quenching, it's the perfect accompaniment at the dining table or for casual socialization at the bar.
Hop Bitterness (IBU): 26
Color: Golden Sunrise
Malt: 2 Row, Caramel 40
Hops: Styrian Golding, Saaz

Beer Bar Review #2: Delaney's Taproom and Restaurant, New Haven

Beer Selection: 60 Taps / 70 Bottles or Cans
Beer Prices: $4-$9

Beer: 3.5 Mugs (More Taps than any other CT bar I know of and the bottle list is second to none)

Food: 2.5 Plates (for wings and fries...yet to venture into the rest of the menu)
Happy Hour/ Beer Specials: YES!!!.  Awesome Happy hour here.  Monday - Friday 3-6PM select drinks, including some beers are Buy one get one.  The coolest part is when you buy a beer you get a sweet token to hold onto to redeem for your next beer.  They also offer free wings during happy hour.  Now I know what you are thinking.  The wings are plopped by the hundreds unto some aluminum dish and end up cold in 5 minutes, right?  NOPE!!!  They make your wings to order even during happy hour!  Not only does this ensure better quality wings but it is way less wasteful.  Great job Delaney's!!
Will I go Back: In a heartbeat, instant favorite
Scene: Awesome, This is not a touristy New Haven establishment.   This is a "feel like you are part of the family" kind of place.

Ahh Delaney's Tap Room.  Where o' where to begin.   For starters let me just say that this place is beyond awesome.  One of my favorite places in all of Connecticut.  I came across Delaney's a few years ago at the recommendation of a bartender at Christopher Martin's Restaurant in New Haven.  I do not have a ton of eating experience at Delaney's so lets skip right to the beer.  There is soooo much beer.  60 Taps and more than 70 different bottle selections.  The beer is always fresh and always cold.  On top at Delaney's you can find Lagers, Wheat Beers, Pale Ales, Stouts, Porters, India Pale Ales!!!, Brown Ales, Black Ales, Tripels, Blondes and more.  Like any awesome Beer Bar, the beer list changes faster than you can say Sea Hag IPA.

Current CT beers on tap are:  Naught Nurse (City Steam Brewery), New England Gold Stock German IPA...which I have never tried but sounds AMAZINGGG.

Delaney's has a great flow to the place itself.  The place takes up the whole side of a very small street, which gets closed in July for their Beer and Chili Festival (more details on this great event as we get a little closer).  Outside there are a number of Patio Tables for warm weather dining and drinking.  There are two main bar areas with the dining room sandwiched in between.  There is the restaurant bar with a smaller selection of draft beers and then there is the tap room.  The Tap Room features the huge selection of draft beer, tables for dining and a few dart boards as well.  There are TVs in both areas to watch Soccer and anything else (Thank god for the TVs, it was at Delaney's last July during the Beer/Chili Fest where I saw Derek Jeter's 3000th hit!!!)

This place has a great vibe to it.  While I have yet to have a meal here, I have had the wings and the fries on several occasions.  Both are biggity-boom-banging (very damn good)!

Delaney's also holds many many events from beer dinners to their very own beer and chili festival.  I will be spotlighting these as they approach.
